Asteatotic Eczema / Miliaria / Drug Eruption

Asteatotic eczema (dry skin) is commonly seen during winter time in Japan around the areas of the feet, arms, and the trunk. The elderly people are more affected because the skin becomes dryer as aged. Miliaria (heat rash) is common in summer. Drug eruption occurs as the causative drug triggers the immune reaction and the skin becomes  reddish. Severe drug eruption requires hospitalization.

For the patients with asteatotic eczema, we ask how the patients commonly wash their bodies, a type of soap used, temperature of the bathing hot water, and the daily number of taking the bath. We then prescribe emollient, topical steroid, and oral anti-histamines. For those with miliaria (heat rash), topical steroid and oral anti-histamines are prescribed. The management of drug eruption is similar, but stopping the causative agent is the most crucial part of the treatment.  Drug induced lymphocyte stimulation test may be conducted to investigate the causative agent.
