Stomatitis / Cheilitis / Oral herpes

Inflammation inside the mouth cause the mucosal epithelium to be damaged in stomatitis. If these changes occur in the skin and mucosal epithelium of the mouth angle, it is called angular cheilitis. A fungus called Candida may grow in these lesions. The lips can be affected and the condition is called cheilitis. Virus called Herpes Simplex Virus can cause cold sores and small blisters with sore pain characterize this condition.

The management of stomatitis and cheilitis include medical patch (such as Aftach Oral Adhesive Tablet), white petrolatum (Propeto), and a short course of topical steroid. In treating cold sores, oral anti-viral medicine (aciclovir, famcicrovir, valaciclovir) with topical anti-inflammatory medicine (Dimethyl isopropylazulene - Azunol is the brand name) is prescribed, and only anti-viral ointment is used if the symptom is mild.
