It is commoner among infants and young children, but the symptoms may start during the adulthood. It is thought that those with atopic tendency, which include 3 conditions (atopic dermatitis, asthma, and hay fever or allergic rhinitis). By exposing to allergenic substances, dryness, or sweating, those with atopic tendency develop atopic dermatitis. Genetic factors are important in this condition and the lack or the scantiness of innate moisturizing agent play the major role. Investigating the causative allergenic substances rarely results in the better management.

The management of the conditions require the use of emollient to make the skin condition closer to the one without atopic dermatitis, as well as the use of topical steroid and tacrolimus. Oral antihistamines may help mitigating the symptom.
