Herpes Zoster

Herpes zoster is caused by varicella zoster virus. Painful red rash occurs on one side of the body. Most people are infected by varicella zoster virus in childhood and suffer from chicken pox, and the viruses keep staying in the ganglions for life. These dormant viruses causes herpes zoster some time in life when the immune system gets weakened. The immune system becomes weakened after excessive work, emotional stress, other sickness, a surgery, aging, deteriorated physical strength, or immunosupressive therapy, but it can occur without such causes.

The management includes oral anti-viral medicine, NSAIDS, vitamin B12, and anti inflammatory ointment. Postherpetic neuralgia is persistent pain after the skin lesions have cured, and requires oral medication. If the pain is too severe, the patient is referred to a pain clinic. Until after all the skin lesions form crusts, the patients are suggested to avoid small children to eliminate possible infection who may not have been suffered from chicken pox yet. Warming up the skin lesion would ease the pain and taking hot bath tab twice a day works to alleviate the symptoms.
