Tinea is caused by mold called dermatophyte growing in the hands, feet, and finger/toe nails. It may occur on the head, trunk, or groins. It is diagnosed by looking at the scales from the lesion under the microscope.

Topical medicine is applied for tinea on the hand, foot, or trunk, while oral antifungal medicine is used for the lesion on the nail, scalp, or other areas that has low effect with topical medicine. While taking oral antifungal medicine, regular blood test may be necessary to check liver function, renal function, and blood cell count.
