In case there is complete skin defect and the removed skin is lost, topical ointment is used and a large or functionally important area such as at a joint may need to be treated surgically with skin grafting and a skin flap. Skin ulcer on the stasis dermatitis on the shins is difficult to treat surgically ( an is called refractory ulcer). One may need to be admitted if the skin defect is large and needs to be stabilized after the surgery.
