Ingrown nail (titanium wire procedure)
Ingrown nails are caused by nail deformity and the sides or corner of the toenail digs into the skin at the end or side of the toe. No treatment is necessary if there is no inflammation or pain. If the pain or appearance is a problem, we first suggest to try topical cream or the use of cotton underneath the edge of the nails. Partial removal of the nail may be offered under local anesthesia (digital block). If these do not work, phenol method to remove the side of the nail permanently may be suggested as the last resort. Titanium wire correction method unwinds the deformed nails for a few months and the patients are encouraged to put one's weight on the toes to flatten the newly formed nails during that few months period. The titanium wire correction method is not covered by Japanese Health Insurance.
